Prozac

What Your Doctor May Not be Telling You

Prozac is the brand name for fluoxetine. When Lithium, Tegretol, Valporate or Klonopin doesn't work for you sometimes your doctor will resort to Prozac. He will assure you it is a safe drug, though most often used for atypical depression, it can also be used for bipolar disorder. He will ask if you are bothered by severe insomnia or if he notices that your weight is dangerously low he may still prescribe fluoxetine because it is considered a very safe according to the pharmaceutical companies. But really how safe is Prozac for you????

Prozac comes in 20-mg capsules. The manufacturer says that most people get the maximum antidepressant effects from just one capsule daily. But some may need as much as 80mgs before any "relief" is experienced. Generally the higher the dose the higher the side effects.

Common side effects include increased agitation, insomnia, nausea, diarrhea, or stomach cramps; headache and nervousness. As mentioned before in the other articles about bipolar drugs these symptoms indicate that your body is being poisoned. No you probably won't die today but the fact remains your body is slowly being poisoned by any drug that causes these types of adverse effects on your body.

Even the F.D.A. says WATCH IT. +++++++ The F.D.A. which I am not particularly fond of due to their very liberal stand on pharmaceutical drugs warn us to, "Closely watch anyone taking antidepressants, especially early in treatment or when the dose is changed. Patients who become irritable or anxious, or have new or increased thoughts of suicide or other changes in mood or behavior should contact their health care professional right away.

It is noted also be the F.D.A. that children taking antidepressants may increase in suicidal thoughts and actions. This is especially true for about 1 out of 50 patients (I hope you are not the one.)

When I was running a home, called Catherine's House, for elderly care patients I had a 92 year old woman named Calla admitted to my home by her daughter. This woman was a real problem for most residential homes because she would shriek and scream if you did not sit right next to her and hold her hand day in and day out, hour by hour. Never was I able to do any kind of domestic chores without this poor woman screaming in great agony.

This is the Newspaper article in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Monday, December 1, 1997

I slowly took Calla off Prozac and introduced her to nature's own Prozac, kelp and larger quantity and quality of foods known to be rich in vitamin B complex: such as eggs, brown rice, brewer's yeast, whole wheat bread (instead of that white wonder bread she loved),lentils, sunflower seeds, hazelnuts, alfalfa, liver, sardines, salmon and last but not least I started her on live juices.

These live juices included a carrot, celery and apple combo which tastes great. I also gave her barley green powder mixed most often with Welch's 100% grape juice. Within 3 months the woman was a different woman. She became a pleasant, sociable, likable person. Her daughter was so pleased with her progress she withdrew her mother from my home 2 years later at the age of 94. Why? Her daughter's letter is below.

Her mom had her senses back, she was less frail than when she came into the home 2 years earlier. And the daughter said she and her mom were going to finally do that life time dream and travel across the United States together. And they did.

Would this happy ending been possible had her mother stayed on Prozac? My personal opinion is no. Poor Calla was incapable of anything outside of taking her pills and feeling so helpless all she could do was scream to let out her sheer frustration of her miserable life.

She suffered most of the side effects common to Prozac: insomnia, nausea, diarrhea, stomach cramps, headache and nervousness (Who wouldn't scream night and day?) But all that ended happily for her. She enjoyed the sweet companionship of her daughter on their across the states vacation till she went to her final rest.

Are you suffering like Calla? Do something about it. The Essential Guide to Psychiatric Drugs claims a patient on 20 mg a day can stop abruptly; and those on higher does can taper off, but there is little problem with withdrawal.

So be encouraged-redirect that spring creek of neurotransmitters in your brain. Begin your new life's journey today. It's never too late even if your are 92!
